Cool Man by Aayush

We have been using soundation for chrome  to compose soundscapes in response to two things

  1. A work of art as inspiration
  2. A brief

Here are some of the paintings and photographs we started with.

Congratulations Kauri Team!!

DAWs

Digital Audio Workstations

Thanks to the expertise of volunteer Michael, we have been looking into working digitally with music. Michael has shared with students some of his own projects using  Ableton Live and helped us get started on projects of our own. Using soundation.com Kauri team are composing pieces of music using layers of samples. There's lots of musical talk going on about tempo (how fast?), form, timbre (what type of sound?). This is a great start- I wonder where this digital adventure will lead us?

Challenge to Kauri Team

Where and how can you use and share the music tracks you are making?
It would be great to see your original music used in your blogs, videos etc.

Marimba Group

Last Wednesday, in between the showers, we moved a couple of marimbas outside at lunchtime. We had figured out that we could play a piece called Mbira Jam with lots of people on each marimba. Sharing the notes was tricky at first, but lots of fun once we got the hang of it.

Pūngāwerewere

We've been having fun with this catchy little waiata by the legendary Hirini Melbourne.

The melody starts on B and climbs down, then another climb down from C.
The B pattern is repeated, then you need to jump down to a low D for mahia to whare e.

Here are the chords:
G-C-G-
D7-G-D7-G--

Rhythm partners

In Kauri team we have been getting 'hands-on' with a variety of instruments in ' rotations'. At each 'station' there is a series of tasks to help develop confidence and creativity with the instruments. Here's a clip of what Kamahl and Jordan put together after just a few minutes working together with boomwhackers. Later on, they were able to transfer the same patterns to a marimba.

A taste of Telemann

Over the past couple of days some classes have had the privilege of hearing some 18th century flute music played by volunteer Lily. Lily has been learning the flute for about ten years, and when she gets back to England she will be furthering her music studies at University.
Here's a little clip of Lily playing an excerpt from Fantasia in A minor  by Georg Philipp Telemann(1681-1767)
